Our māra and orchard provide practical, seasonal learning opportunities for ākonga at Te Kura o Waihārara.
Tamariki take part in preparing the whenua, planting, caring for crops and fruit trees, observing seasonal changes, harvesting and using kai grown at the kura.
This learning strengthens understanding of where food comes from and develops practical skills, patience, cooperation and responsibility. It also connects learning across pūtaiao, pāngarau, hauora, hangarau and literacy.
Through the māra and orchard, ākonga learn about sustainable practices, healthy kai and the importance of caring for Papatūānuku. This mahi reflects our kura value of Kaitiakitanga and draws on the knowledge and support of whānau and our wider community.
