Nau Mai, Tauti Mai ki Te Kura o Waihārara
Welcome to Te Kura o Waihārara
Te Kura o Waihārara is a small rural kura catering to students from Years 1 to 8, located just 15 minutes from the townships of Awanui and Pukenui, and 20 minutes north of Kaitāia.
Situated at the gateway to the Aupouri Peninsula, our kura is bordered to the east by State Highway 1, while to the west lies the vast Aupouri Forest, leading to the iconic Ninety Mile Beach. Just southwest of us is Lake Waiparera, and to the east, the stunning Rangaunu Harbour and the seaside settlement of Kaimaumau, home to many of our ākonga.
Our students proudly identify as Māori, with whakapapa connections to Ngāi Takoto, and some are the mokopuna of past students. Tikanga me te Reo Māori are woven naturally into daily life, ensuring a learning environment deeply connected to our cultural heritage.
To support our whānau, free transport is available within our transport zone via the school bus or van, making it easier for our tamariki to access their education.
Principal's Welcome
Dobro došli – Nau Mai, Haere Mai
He marangai, tū ana te pāhukahuka, he iti Pioke, nō Rangaunu, he au tōna!
At Te Kura o Waihārara, we stand strong in our identity, embrace learning opportunities, and uphold our role as Kaitiaki of our Taiao.
Nau mai, haere mai ki tō tātou kura.
The Board, staff, students, and I extend a warm welcome to our kura’s website. We invite you to explore and learn more about our small but visionary kura, where big ideas thrive.
As an Enviroschool, we are deeply committed to sustainability. We empower our students to develop a kaitiaki mindset, reduce our environmental footprint, and provide for our whānau through sustainable practices.
At Waihārara, we nurture our tamariki to embody Rangatiratanga, Kaitiakitanga, and Ako. We encourage them to be respectful and caring, thoughtful and considerate, resilient and determined. Each day, they will gain new knowledge, create lasting memories, and develop a strong sense of pride and achievement.
We are excited to welcome you and your whānau into our kura. Learning here is meaningful, engaging, and deeply connected to our values. We are committed to providing the support needed for every child to reach their full potential and grow into confident, capable individuals.
Our vision is to provide a Te Ao Māori educational pathway, firmly grounded in our core values as reflected in our Student Graduate Profile, Te Ara Taumata. At Waihārara, Māori enjoying educational success as Māori means ensuring every Māori student can realise their unique potential and succeed as Māori.
To achieve this, we believe in working together—whānau, kaiako, and tamariki—so that each child flourishes in their learning journey.
We are here for our whānau and tamariki, and because of our whānau and tamariki.
Ngā mihi,
Davene Clarke

Small although the Pioke (dogfish shark) may be, great is its wake, as it traverses the might of the Rangaunu harbour.
"The characteristics of our Waihārara tamariki, who attend our kura and those who reside on the shores of the Rangaunu Harbour are likened to those of the Pioke
