Matariki is a time to remember those who have passed, celebrate the present and prepare for the future.
At Te Kura o Waihārara, learning about Matariki is grounded in pūrākau, mātauranga Māori, whakapapa and our connection to te taiao. Tamariki explore the stories of Tāwhirimātea, the stars of Matariki, seasonal change, kai, remembrance, aspiration and renewal.
Matariki provides opportunities for ākonga to:
remember and honour loved ones
share kai, waiata, kōrero and learning
observe changes in the environment
reflect on the past year
set aspirations for the year ahead
strengthen relationships with whānau, hapū, iwi and the wider community.
Our kura also uses Matariki as a time to come together, celebrate learning and uphold Ako, Rangatiratanga and Kaitiakitanga.
