Te Mahi a Te Poumarumaru

Te Poumarumaru is responsible for the governance of Te Kura o Waihārara. It ensures the kura meets its legal obligations, gives effect to the aspirations of whānau, hapū and iwi, and remains focused on the learning, wellbeing and achievement of all ākonga.

Te Poumarumaru sets the strategic direction of the kura through the vision, values, strategic goals and annual priorities. It monitors progress, reviews information about ākonga learning and wellbeing, and holds the Tumuaki accountable for the effective leadership and management of the kura.

The roles of governance and management are distinct. Te Poumarumaru governs and provides oversight. The Tumuaki manages the day-to-day operation of the kura with staff.

Core responsibilities of Te Poumarumaru include:

• setting and reviewing strategic direction

• monitoring ākonga progress, achievement and wellbeing

• approving and monitoring the annual budget

• overseeing property planning and major projects

• ensuring appropriate policies, procedures and assurance systems are in place

• acting as a good employer

• supporting succession, continuity and the long-term sustainability of the kura

Members of Te Poumarumaru and the Tumuaki also take part in governance learning through Ngā Kura ā Iwi o Aotearoa alongside other Kura ā-Iwi. This supports shared learning, strengthens governance capability and helps ensure the kura is guided by approaches that reflect the identity and aspirations of Kura ā-Iwi. 

In carrying out this work, Te Poumarumaru is guided by Ako, Rangatiratanga and Kaitiakitanga.

Te Poumarumaru meets regularly throughout the year to govern the kura, monitor progress and make decisions that support the learning and wellbeing of ākonga.
