Te Poumarumaru provides governance for Te Kura o Waihārara and acts on behalf of our kura community. Its role is to uphold the aspirations of whānau, hapū and iwi and to support the learning, hauora and success of all uri.

Meetings of Te Poumarumaru are generally open to members of the public to attend as observers. Meeting dates are shared through kura communications. Anyone wishing to speak at a meeting is asked to contact Te Poumarumaru in advance.

Approved meeting minutes are available on request from the kura office.

The Board Secretary supports the work of Te Poumarumaru but is not a member of Te Poumarumaru.

Te Poumarumaru is responsible for the governance of Te Kura o Waihārara. It is responsible for ensuring the kura meets its legal obligations, gives effect to the aspirations of whānau, hapū and iwi, and remains focused on the learning, hauora and achievement of all uri.

Te Poumarumaru sets the strategic direction of the kura through its vision, values, strategic goals and annual priorities. It monitors progress, considers information about uri learning and wellbeing, and supports and holds the Tumuaki to account for leading and managing the kura effectively.

The roles of governance and management are distinct. Te Poumarumaru governs, sets direction and provides oversight. The Tumuaki leads the day-to-day operation of the kura alongside staff.

Core responsibilities of Te Poumarumaru include:

• setting and reviewing the strategic direction of the kura

• monitoring uri progress, achievement, attendance and wellbeing

• approving and monitoring the annual budget

• overseeing property planning and major projects

• ensuring appropriate policies, procedures and assurance systems are in place

• meeting its responsibilities as a good employer

• supporting succession, continuity and the long-term sustainability of the kura.

Members of Te Poumarumaru and the Tumuaki also participate in governance learning through Ngā Kura ā Iwi o Aotearoa, alongside other Kura ā Iwi. This shared learning strengthens governance capability and supports approaches that reflect the identity, aspirations and kaupapa of Kura ā Iwi.

In carrying out this mahi, Te Poumarumaru is guided by Ako, Rangatiratanga and Kaitiakitanga, and by its responsibility to serve the tamariki, whānau, hapū and iwi connected to Te Kura o Waihārara.

Te Poumarumaru meets regularly throughout the year to govern the kura, monitor progress and make decisions that support the learning, hauora and achievement of our uri.
