EXTRA CURRICULAR

At our school we endeavour to develop the whole child and part of that development relates to co-curricular activities.

We offer a number of sporting and cultural activities, together with a series of education opportunities outside the classroom.

Interschool Sports

Our tamariki participate in competition inter-school sports in individual events representing Waihārara School and collaborate with other schools to participate in team events.

Kapa Haka

Kapa haka plays a large role in the revitalisation of the Māori language and Māori cultural values. Our students all participate proudly in our kapa haka roopu. It enhances positive well-being by encouraging a sense of belonging, providing a "safe haven" in which to practice te reo me ōna tikanga, whilst reinforcing social collaboration and cohesion.

Library

Every School Needs a Library - Welcome to our library

‘You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back, relax, all you need is a book.’ Dr Seuss

We are currently doing a stocktake at our school library so that our tamariki can borrow books and continue their reading at home .

Our school promotes reading by having an effective library to support each child’s learning journey.  Also our library supports curriculum needs and teacher resources.

When our stocktake is complete our library will be open during lunchtimes for activities such as craft, games, dance or just for a quiet place to read.

All classes will go to the library each week.

Education Outside the Classroom

Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) is an important part of school life at our school.

The interactions that take place while students are involved in learning outside the classroom are rich opportunities for implementing many aspects of the NZ Curriculum.

The experiences students have together beyond the classroom are important not only because of the learning that occurs for each individual student but also for the shared experience that teachers can draw on afterwards for further learning opportunities.

EnviroSchools

Waihārara School is a proud Enviroschool and our values are based on the Enviroschools five guiding principles.

Empowered Students are enabled to participate in a meaningful way in the life of Eastern Hutt School. They are supported to take action for real change.

Learning for Sustainability recognises the types of teaching and learning that foster student empowerment, decision-making, action and sustainable outcomes.

Māori Perspectives honours the status of tangata whenua in this land and the value of indigenous knowledge in enriching and guiding learning and action.

Respect for the Diversity of People and Cultures acknowledges the unique gifts, contributions and perspectives of individuals and groups, reinforcing the need for participatory decision-making.

Sustainable Communities act in ways that nurture people and nature, now and in the future, to maintain the health and viability of our environment, society, culture and economy.

Circability

Circability is a circus arts programmes which Whaea Nina facilitates. It provides social-impact circus arts and intervention-based activities that directly address social needs. Circability does this by increasing the confidence, energy, creativity, and aspiration of our tamariki through the joy of discovery.
